Android Compatiblity

A lot of tablets advertise as being compatible with Android, but there's a catch to that. Not all tablets will work with Android devices, and not all Android devices will work with tablets.

There are 3 main factors when it comes to compatibility.

  • Kernel

  • Tablet Firmware

  • Android

Linuxwacom and Digimend have been in the Android Common Kernel since at least version 4.4 (possibly earlier). Some custom kernel builds may not always work with tablets, but for the most part, it should. It is inherited from the upstream LTS (and further upstream mainline) kernel.

Tablet firmware is also quite important. Some versions may be compatible, while others may not. For example, a Gaomon S620 with firmware version T108e 190814 will not work with my Mi A3 with CrDroid v11.1 (Android 15) while it works with firmware version T108e 230828 . I'm not sure what causes this, but I would probably say some kind of HID device descriptor or something along the lines of that. Of course, don't quote me here, I don't actually know what's going on.

And of course, there's Android version. Android versions >14 have pretty much full support for tablets except for expresskeys. Otherwise, pray that your phone manufacturer hasn't pushed an OTA update that breaks tablet support.
